Cinderella's London
Cinderella wakes as if from a glorious hundred years’ sleep and opens her eyes to see her luxurious Langham Hotel bedroom and, on her bedside table, an invitation to the glittering star-studded ball – tonight!
At first she’s filled with joy at the thought of meeting all those glamorous people and, who knows, perhaps the super-hot Prince Charming (who she’s heard is staying in the Langham Hotel Infinity Suite)…
Then it hits her. WHAT WILL SHE WEAR TO THE BALL TONIGHT? AND HOW CAN SHE WIN THE HEART OF PRINCE CHARMING? As if by magic, the phone rings. It’s the Concierge she had tipped last night. “Is there anything I can do for you, Madam?” Cinderella pours her little heart out, and in no time at all, she has filled her notebook with an absolutely fabulous list of luxurious London shopping suggestions. A quick pit stop for a zesty, non-alcoholic cocktail at the Langham’s stylish Artesian Bar, and she’s off to find the outfit to wow her prince.
A short taxi ride later (15 minutes’ walk is a long time in heels)…and she’s at Agent Provocateur (6 Broadwick Street, Soho). “It’s one thing to win over a prince; it’s quite another to keep one”, says one of the trim assistants, as she shows her a curve-enhancing Diva Corset in black satin. A perfect fit.
Cinderella is soon lost but a friendly cockney (East-end Londoner) on foody Berwick Street Market puts her back on track, and she shop-hops around the trendy Marshall and Newburgh streets next to the legendary Carnaby Street which swung London in the 1960’s. Cinderella falls for a mother-of-pearl and velvet Pumpkin bag by Storisac at wooden-panelled Liberty’s (Regent Street), the reliable palace of style since 1875.
Leaving Liberty’s, she dodges past the Regent Street crowds and slips off into the peace of Conduit Street for tea and Pierre Gagnaire cakes in the magical surrounds of Sketch gallery and gastronomic haunt (9 Conduit Street). Then she heads for suity Savile Row to be charmed by the London cool of B Store (24a Savile Row) and a pair of silver slippers. A perfect fit and they make her want to dance!
Dancing down Conduit Street she notices a group of paparazzi gathered around the Berluti bespoke shoe shop at number 43. It is… it’s Prince Charming! He must be shopping for tonight’s ball too.
As he speeds away in his Bentley, no-one notices that in the media scrum one of his beautifully shiny Berluti shoes has been left all alone on the pavement. She slips it into her Pumpkin bag, and it’s the perfect fit.
Walking past New Bond Street, Cinderella feels underdressed and alone, beside the chic couples and designer labels. On Old Bond Street, glittering diamonds glint at her through shop windows.
Wandering off Bond Street, Cinderella finds the five floors of fashion that are Dover Street Market, where Comme des Garçons and young designers from all over the globe sell their wares. A shimmering dress stitched together from golden saris is truly fit for a princess. She thinks to herself, “That bonus came along like magic, just at the right time!” A perfect fit.
On the walls of Hush in cobbled Lancashire Court, many celebrities are pictured with their fingers to their lips, and she happens to be sitting under one of Prince Charming. As she tucks into her Modern French cuisine, she overhears the discreet buzz of hot gossip, “Prince Charming has lost his shoe and is offering a reward for the person who returns it”. She runs through her mental shopping list for tonight’s party. Corset from Agent Provocateur – tick; Pumpkin sac from Liberty’s, got it; silver slippers from B Store, yes; ball gown from Dover Street Market, done. To complete the look, she books herself in for a hair-do and make-up at celebrity spot Mathew Alexander. Now as she walks down the street, heads turn. She finds an Art Nouveau necklace at Gray’s Antique Market (58 Davies Street), just off shoe-store-lined South Moulton Street. First mission accomplished, and now to seduce Prince Charming. Back at the Langham Hotel, London’s Spa, Cinderella takes a soothing green-tea pedicure to ease her tired feet, before changing into her finery.
Now she really does look and feel like a princess. Taking her courage and Berluti shoe in her hands, she goes to see Prince Charming. He takes one look at her and his long lost shoe, and rewards her with a kiss. In the gossip columns the following week, all the stories are of Prince Charming and the belle of the ball, a mysterious princess. Interactive map.
