Explore the themes of childhood past and present. The V&A Museum of Childhood is home to one of the world's largest and oldest collections of toys and childhood artefacts. The collection, which dates from the 16th century to the present day includes dolls, teddy bears, toy soldiers, train sets, model cars, puppets, rocking horses, costumes, board games, and some of the first jigsaw puzzles ever made.

The museum is designed to show the collections in a way which is accessible to adults and children of all ages. The V&A Museum of Childhood offers an excellent programme of temporary exhibitions, daily activities and seasonal events.

Exhibitions at The V&A Museum of Childhood:

Young Runaway Slaves
31 Mar- March 2008
Inspired by the experiences of young people working as slaves and servants within Tower Hamlets, Newham and Hackney between 1670–1800. Historian S.I. Martin and artist Jennifer Lewis worked with Year 8 pupils from Swanlea Secondary School to create a display to mark the Bicentennial of the Abolition of the Slave Trade, using historical objects, period images, newspaper reports, and original artwork.

Space Age -Exploration, design and popular culture
24 Nov - 6 April 2008
This major exhibition explores people's age old fascination with space. It will show how this fascination has influenced popular culture, from literature and comics to film, design and merchandising, including toys.

Sweet
24 Nov - April 2008
Sweet features buildings created from the produce of the colonial trade made by artist Jaimini Patel. Her detailed sugar and spice models are made from the very commodities that fortunes were built on. Models based on London buildings, made by primary and secondary school children from packaging to chocolate and other sweet things, are displayed alongside… architecture you can eat!
